Witton Gilbert War Memorial.
The work involved in cleaning this memorial was very extensive
and to protect the public had to be scaffolded and screened.
The
memorial above was in a moss moulded state and couldn't be Sand Blasted because
of the softness of the sandstone. It had endured years of the British weather
and was in need of a good clean. Abbey Stonecraft were given the job of water
blasting both the Monument and the sandstone walling around the area. After
blasting, the names of the deceased soldiers were re-cut and painted back in
by hand and the sandstone slabs were also re-pointed. A painstaking but very
rewarding job. The monument now stands proud and gleaming in the town centre
of Fence Houses, County Durham.
This
memorial had to be removed and resited after cleaning. Pictures show the extent
of work that had to be done to get to the removal stage. The final photograph
shows a beautifully restored memorial.
